Final Score: Monkton Wood 14 – 59 Pyrland School
.
Our Year 9 rugby team put on a thrilling display of skill, teamwork and determination in their away clash against Monkton Wood, sealing an emphatic 59–14 victory.
.
The match began in dominant fashion for Pyrland, with Oliver R sprinting through the defence to score not once, but twice in quick succession, giving Pyrland a 0–10 lead after two unconverted tries.
.
Monkton Wood responded strongly, breaking through despite Dexter W’s brave effort to hold the ball up. Their successful conversion narrowed the score to 7–10.
.
Moments later, a scrum right under the posts gave Pyrland the perfect platform. Myles took the ball from the base, weaved through defenders, and scored under the posts before converting his own try to extend the lead to 7–15.
.
Defensive pressure soon paid off again as Szymon burst out of the line with a huge tackle, turning defence into attack. Ruben quickly spread the ball wide to Oliver R, who danced down the wing for his hat-trick try – 7–22.
.
A lapse in focus saw Pyrland overcommit at a ruck, leaving the blind side open for Monkton Wood to exploit, cutting the gap to 14–22 just before half time.
.
Second Half Dominance
.
The second half began explosively. Mason and Dexter set up a strong ruck, giving Myles room to attack. He broke the line and offloaded beautifully to Oliver R, who stepped past the winger to score under the posts. Myles converted to make it 14–29.
.
Pyrland’s momentum continued as Myles picked from a ruck to add another try himself (14–34), before a clever kick over the top found open space. Oliver R chased at full pace, dived on the loose ball, and completed a superb fourth try – 14–39.
.
The next moment of magic came from Victor, who ran nearly the length of the field to touch down in the corner. Despite the tricky angle, Herbie F stepped up and nailed the conversion to make it 14–46.
.
The team’s energy didn’t fade – Mason H crashed through defenders to set up another ruck, with Myles spinning the ball wide to Szymon, who finished brilliantly in the corner for his debut try – 14–55.
.
Capping off the game in style, Victor burst through a weary Monkton Wood defence for the final try, sealing an outstanding 14–59 victory for Pyrland.
This win sets us up perfectly for our last day of half term clash vs Gordano in the county cup!
