KS4 Target Grades

It is our intent that students at Pyrland School are given opportunities and support to achieve higher progress at KS4 than others nationally. We work with MNSP Trust staff to allocate all students aspirational grades to aim for by the end of the KS4, called Target Grades. These targets encourage students here to make better progress than other students with similar prior attainment profiles nationally and open doors to a wide variety of quality courses post-16.

KS4 Target Grades enable students to:

  • have an aspirational but achievable goal to aim for
  • have confidence in their potential
  • achieve their personal best by applying effort and following their teachers’ instructions
  • plan for their next steps in education or employment

KS4 Target Grades enable teachers to:

  • plan differentiated work that is appropriate for the needs of individual students
  • encourage students to see what outcomes they can achieve
  • continue to add challenge by further raising targets where they are exceeded by students
  • challenge and support students who are underperforming

KS4 Assessment Grades

Students are set targets and are measured against them, in reference to GCSE grades or their equivalent. Students are set on a Flightpath and sit regular assessments, where they are informed their ‘Likely to Achieve’ Grade’. Each KS4 assessment correlates to a graded GCSE or equivalent outcome:

GCSE Grades: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Vocational Grades: Level 1 Pass Level 1 Merit Level 1 Distinction Level 2 Pass Level 2 Merit Level 2 Distinction Level 2 Distinction *

Where Grade 4 – is a standard GCSE pass and Grade 5 – is a strong GCSE pass Students’ receive 5 formal assessments a year within each subject area and a series of Mock Examinations to prepare them for their final exams in Year 11. Where a student is shown to have exceeded their target, students will be congratulated and, their target will be raised accordingly to ensure there is always an extra amount of challenge and ambition.
