Former Pyrland School high flier Sienna Kayes has been in touch to tell us about her foreign travels and progress since leaving in 2021. Sienna studied French, Geography and RPE at the academy before signing up for the International Baccalaureate at Bridgwater and Taunton College.
She told us: “I do maths, literature, chemistry, biology, psychology and Spanish. Spanish is definitely my favourite subject and psychology is a very close second. There are only seven people in my year group in the course which I really love and I’ve made some great friends.”
As part of her course Sienna had to complete 50 hours of volunteering so last summer she travelled to India to spend two weeks helping in a hospital. She rounded off the experience with a trip to the Himalayas – and all while just 17 years old!
.
“I have caught a serious passion for travelling! It was an amazing experience and I would like to go travelling again this summer, maybe in Europe. My eighteenth birthday is in a few weeks so it’s crazy.”
.
In addition to her studies and travels, Sienna has also been involved in the wider community. She is the youth leader for Somerset Climate Action Network and visited the House of Lords to discuss climate change and wellbeing. She even caught up with Minister of State for the Armed Forces James Heappey to discuss some of the issues.
.
Sienna is returning to the academy in early July when she will meet students in the Year 10 Aspire Programme to talk to them first hand about her experiences with the International Baccalaureate and the opportunities on offer post 16.
.
Acting Headteacher Lisa Webber said: ‘It is amazing what so many of our young men and women go onto experience – and in so short a time. Well done Sienna in getting the travel bug and making the most of such an opportunity to volunteer overseas. We look forward to seeing you in July and hearing about your trip first hand.”
