Pyrland School enters the Exmoor Challenge for the first time. Report by Mr Vaughan.
The Exmoor Challenge, organised by the Exmoor Rotary Club, is open to young people to attempt a gruelling 16 mile hike across the rolling countryside. Our three teams, comprising of Year 7 pupils, undertook a series of practice walks across the Quantocks alongside in class training sessions to get themselves prepared. It would not have been possible without dedicated staff given up their time to support our children.
On Saturday 3rd May the school entered three teams alongside over 120 other teams from across the south west of England. Each group had to navigate with only a route card, map, compass, steely determination and resolve to get around without any adult support! After a quick briefing and kit checks they were off.
The warm weather and length of the walk was draining. But fuelled on a mixture of adrenaline and sugary sweets, each team successfully got to the finish line at Dulverton School. Each competitor learnt a valuable lesson in teamwork and how to motivate one another. The atmosphere at the end of the race was awesome. This was an amazing achievement for every pupil and one they will never forget!
Well done to: Henry, Coral, Earlean, Sasha, Martha, Isla, Poppy, Elodie, Bobby, Ethan, Oliver and Baxter.
